Stratford Fiitival's Oliver! presents
brighter bent on Dickens' dark world
The Huron Expositor • July 12, 2006
As it explores the
theme of family this
season, the Stratford
Festival's choice of
the musical Oliver! is
a winner for both par-
ents and kids alike.
The only thing bet-
ter than watching the
extremely talented
children - two of them
from the Seaforth
area. - singing and
dancing their way
through the show,
was peeking over at
the shining eyes of
my nine-year-old
daughter as she
looked on in delight
during her first expe-
rience at the Festival.
Putting a brighter
bent on the dark
world of Victorian
England's poverty in
Charles Dickens' novel Oliver Twist,
the musical is packed with songs
you keep singing long after the
show ends.
But, few will sing them better
than the angel -voiced Tyler Pearse,
who plays the orphan Oliver. His
sweet renditions of Where is Love?
and Who Will Buy? were particular-
ly touching.
The Artful Dodger, played- engag-
ingly by Scott Beaudin, leads a gang
of fast -fingered and very nimble -
footed young pickpockets through
some wonderful dance numbers
including Consider Yourself and
Pick a Pocket or Two.
We, of course, kept our eyes on the
two St. Columban-area kids playing
orphans Nick Van Bakel and
Thomas. Murray.
While Van Bakel only performs
during the first number, Food,
Glorious Food, his smiling face
demonstrates his enjoyment in his
first experience on the Festival
stage. And, his voice blends beauti-

fully with the chorus of bright
young voices.
Murray is obviously also having
the time of his life on stage - it's
hard to believe he's never danced
before as he masters the intricate
footwork with ease.
Stratford veteran actor and film
star Colm Feore plays a warm and
loveable Fagin to whom thievery is
just one more game to play with his
band of street kids.
Both Feore and Blythe Wilson,
who plays the long-suffering Nancy,
have great singing voices and lead
the ensemble in fun and light-heart-
ed songs like I'd Do. Anything and
Be Back Soon.
The menacing Bill Sikes, played
by Brad Rudy, is a villian you love
to hate and Rudy is complimented
for his convincing performance by
the boos he receives at the final
curtain call.
Take your urchins to Oliver! Your
family will come
out of the the-
atre with a song
on your lips and
a dance in your
step.
