Group of `train buffs' from U.S. riding old
style jiggers on railway through town Sunday
Jeff Heuchert
A glimpse of the old days will be
slowly chugging through Seaforth
this weekend.
A group of train enthusiasts, with
a local connection; will be bringing
their jiggers through town on
Sunday, as they ride the rails of the
Goderich Exeter Railway from
Stratford to Goderich.
A jigger is a small flat car used by
workcrews on a railway, driven by a
handle that is pumped up and down
or by a gas motor.
Mark Loney, of Dry Ridge, KY,
owns his own jigger, but it's his wife
Debbie that is quite familiar with
Huron County and Seaforth.
Debbie was born in Seaforth in
1955, and lived here, with her par-
ents Cecil and Lois, until 1966,
when they moved.
Still frequent visitors to the area,
the two recommended to their group
of riders, that they come up for a
weekend.
Bessie Broome, of Seaforth, is
Debbie's aunt, and says the riders
plan on starting in Stratford,
Sunday morning, around 8 a.m.
"They expect to be heading
through Seaforth around 10 a.m.,
where they may stop briefly," she
says.
"Then they'll head straight
through to Goderich, stop for lunch,
and ride straight back," she says.
Broome says Mark started off as a
"model train buff," and his hobby led
him to finally purchasing his own
jigger about three years ago and
"He's quite proud of it," Broome
says.
She notes that group of jigger
owners and riders have ridden the
rails in several different states in
the U.S., but to her recollection, this
will be the first time they've ridden
in Canada.
