Box Furniture & Floor Coverings 20 Main Street, Seaforth, Ontario (519) 527-0680 Making your /louse a home since 1876 Recommendation made to close Tuckersmith gravel pit Susan Hundertmark After spending more than $11,000 over the past two months to make gravel accessibleat the Tuckersmith gravel pit, Deputy -Clerk Brad Knight is recommending council con- sider closing the pit. "It's just not economical to do that kind of work to get the gravel," he said after last week's Huron East council meeting. "You should perhaps even moth- ball this pit." Huron East had planned to take enough gravel out of the Tuckersmith pit to do all the road work in Tuckersmith ward this year, amounting to about $140,000. But, Knight says the municipality will be as far ahead to ask the con- tractor to supply the gravel. Knight described the Tuckersmith pit as "very boney with a lot of clay over -burden," meaning there are many large boulders that must be broken up into stone before the stone can be crushed into gravel. As well, he said the stone is mixed with clay and it's hard to find a lot of stone together in one place. "We can buy gravel at $1.50 a tonne right now so for us to get it ready to use just doesn't pay off in my mind," he said. Deputy -Mayor Bernie MacLellan, who also sat on Tuckersmith council before amalgamation, said he was surprised by Knight's report about Tuckersmith's only gravel pit. "Since the early `90s, Tuckersmith has opted to buy gravel. Mothballing this pit is probably the proper thing to do," he said. Knight said the Tuckersmith pit has only been used twice since amal- gamation. Of Huron East's five wards, only Grey has gravel pits that are used for the municipality's road work, he said.
