Joe Steffler at Huron East coun- cil's meeting last Tuesday. "The signs wehave up are a disgrace and it's time we got on the ball and were proactive and marketed our municipality," he said. "You should be proud of what you have and we, should have decent signs so that our hamlets don't die," added Steffler. Deputy -Mayor Bernie MacLellan responded that he'd heard a different response to the two new Central Huron signs. "I've heard a number of the public complain about those signs, like, 'How much did my municipality spend on these bloody signs?'" said MacLellan. Mayor Joe Seili added that the casino being located in Central Huron helps the municipality be able to afford the signs. Each approximately 117 inches high, the signs were made of painted aluminum sheeting and plaster, with a poured concrete foundation and are located at the southern entrance to the municipality on Highway 4 and at the western entrance to Central Huron at the Goderich town limits on Highway 8. MacLellan agreed that Huron East could use new entrance signs on major highways but. baulked at the idea of replacing all of the signs erected since amalgama- tion. "Some of those signs haven't been up for three years," agreed McKillop Coun. Sharon McClure. "I think we're going to be criticized highly if we replace signs we just put up when we amalgamated," she said. Steffler said Huron East spent $9,000 on a sign study three years ago and argued that the municipali- ty is already wasting money if it doesn't implement the study. "If we don't start now, we should just light the study on fire and we'll never see it again," he said, adding the signs don't have to be "Taj Mahal signs." Sharon McClure MacLellan said council was initially floored by the prices of signs when the sign study was completed. "When we got the report, we weren't prepared to put another $150,000 in the budget_ for signs," he said. Seili agreed that Huron East is now in a position to begin planning to improve its signage. "When we first got together, we thought roads and bridges were more important but it's time we started blowing our horn a little bit," he said. Council is expected to discuss the sign study at its next meeting in two weeks. 21,'Weehenci EVERY SINGLE PIECE OF FURNITURE AND EVERY ACCESSORY IN OUR a STORES ARE SALE PRICED AND TAX FREE Thousands of pieces in our 3 stores are SALE PRICED.
