A recent match that pitted St. Anne's against a talented squad from Perth, Scotland, is proof of that. The two squads battled in Clinton last Saturday, and Perth came away with a 36-0 victory. After the game, the players enjoyed a pig roast at St. Anne's, and the Perth squad billeted in the homes of the same lads they sought to tackle during competition. "Rugby is one of the only sports where you play hard during the game and when the game's over, everybody's friends," Ditner said. "The level of camaraderie is extremely high, and the boys went home with our guys like brothers." St. Anne's played Perth while on a tour of Scotland, Wales and England in March. St. Anne's was not able to score during that game, and compe- tition was once again stiff on Saturday. "They are very, very good," Ditner said. "They have one player that plays nationally for Wales, on the Wales under -18 team, and they have one player that plays for Scotland's under -18 team." St. Anne's was more prepared this time, but was still outmatched by the experienced Scottish crew. "We had a couple of opportunities to score and the other team knew some desperation moves that they could use to stop us, and they both worked," Ditner said. There will be no trip overseas next year for the St. Anne's rugby teams, but it's likely that another trip will come in three to four years, giving a new crop of players a chance at what Ditner refers to as a once-in-a- lifetime experience. Another team from across the pond may be visiting Clinton much sooner, however. "There's a chance that we're going to be hosting a Welsh team next summer," Ditner said. Men's pairs tournament held in Seaforth The Seaforth Lawn Bowling club held a men's pairs tour- nament on Wednesday, June 14 with 42 bowlers present. The greens were in excellent shape and made for good competitive bowling. High pair for the day was Wayne Wright of Thamesford and Doug Hoskins of London Elmwood. High two game winners were Jack McIntosh and Bill Furlong of London Fairmont. Friday evening saw a good turnout present at 6 p.m. for the first bar- becue of the season with our favourite chefs Neil and Rick. There were 23 bowling in the jitney after. Also there were some new bowlers who came to try the game. In men's pairs at Exeter a week ago, Jack Muir and Bill Roberton won third prize. According to an article in the 2006 L.B.A. Annual, lawn bowling has a history that can be traced back to ancient Egypt, where a variation of the game was played over 3000 years ago. The game has progressed since to the one we know today played at amateur and professional levels all over the world. In Ontario alone there are over 150 clubs with over 8000 bowlers in 16 districts enjoy- ing this challenging and exciting sport. by Mary Finlayson WIELelIC17' FARM EQUIPMENT SEAFORTH 527-0120 EXETER 235-2121 www.teamvincent.com 0 14111 .,arc CASE /i/ Cheryl Heath photo pass as he's tackled by a Scottish FUTURE LINKS JR.
