Seaforth athlete dashes to silver medal at OFSAA
Ben Forrest
Seaforth Public School graduate
Nicholas McGilvery didn't have
much success as a track and field
athlete at the elementary school
level.
Thanks to a recent silver medal at
the Ontario Federation of School
Athletic Associations (OFSAA) high
school championships, however, he
can claim to be one of the top dis-
abled athletes in the province.
McGilvery, who has been hearing
impaired since birth, took second in
the 100 metre ambulatory race at
the OFSAA meet, held in Etobicoke
in early June.
The ambulatory is an open race,
meaning McGilvery was not racing
exclusively against students his
own age.
A 14 year-old Grade 9 student,
McGilvery was only 1.48 seconds
slower than the winner, an 18 -year-
old student from F.E. Madill.
The OFSAA winner, Deric Kruse,
had been ranked No. 1 in the
province going into the final meet of
the season, and the extent of his tal-
ent is not lost on Nicholas' father,
Alex McGilvery.
"Youcan just about see the fire on
the track when he runs," said Alex
in a recent interview.
Nicholas said in the same inter-
view that running track is some-
thing he simply loves to do, adding
that it gives him something to do
other than stay at home.
Baird Robinson, McGilvery's track
coach at St. Anne's Catholic
Secondary School, -is very pleased
that McGilvery was not sitting at
home during track season.
"We're very excited that Nick
chose to get involved this year, and
with the success that he experi-
enced, it's great to see him have an
opportunity to demonstrate his tal-
ents," Robinson said.

was also a joy, it would seem.
"It was great to see him blossom
as he realized he had the chance to
do well,, and the confidence he
gained from it," Robinson said.
Robinson said he was convinced
that McGilvery could make it to the
OFSAA level, but didn't realize
until WOSSAA, a meet reserved for
the top finishers at Huron -Perth,
that Nicholas could have a chance
at a medal.
McGilvery has definite plans to
compete once again next year, and
Robinson is convinced that match-
ing this year's accomplishment at
OFSAA is well within his grasp.
"I think he has a good chance, if
he stays with it, to continue to
medal," Robinson said. "I'm not sure
what's happening with the student
at Madill, whether he'll be back for
another year or whether there'll be
someone else who comes on the
scene, but I would think (Nicholas)
has a really good chance of equaling
what he has done in the past."
Second place may not be good
enough for McGilvery, however. He's
very happy with this year's show-
ing, but has his eyes set on OFSAA
gold.
Self-improvement takes priority
over all else, however.
"The most important thing
is...beating your time every time
you go to the next race," McGilvery
said. "You just keep on pushing it
every step of the way."
