Despite loss, Rem Murray has season to remember Murray family travels to CaiOIIna for Game 7 of Stanley Cup finals The Huron Expositor • June 21, 2006, 2006 Pogo 3 J -,II e"like r t Even after losing Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals Monday night, it was a sea- son to remember for Rem Murray. The 33 -year-old Edmonton Oilers centre, who grew up north of Dublin and played his minor hockey career in Seaforth, made a inspira- tional return to the NHL this past season. Two years ago, while enjoying his eighth season in the NHL, as a member of the Nashville Predators, Murray was diagnosed with cervical dystonia, a nerve condition in which neck muscles contract involuntar- ily, causing abnormal move- ments and posture of the head and. neck. The ailment looked to be a career -ending one for Murray, who filed his retire ment papers and began col- lecting disability insurance. Remarkably, Murray's condition improved with the help of botox injections, to the point he was able to work out through last sea- son's NHL lockout. And, with the help of physical therapy, Murray was able to play with Houston in the AHL this past fall. That was, until the Oilers came knocking. Murray joined the team he started his NHL career with in March, and was a vital compo- nent to the team's improbable playoff run. And maybe best of all, his entire family has been along for the jour- ney. "It's incredible what Rem came back from off of the ice," said Faye Murray, of Seaforth and Rem's sister-in-law. "It's a testament to his perseverance and dedica- tion to hockey." Murray said Rem's three brothers and par- ents attended most of Edmonton's home playoff games and they all made the trek to Carolina for Game 7. In Game 7, Murray logged over 10 minutes on the ice and had two shots on net and played a, part in the Oilers only goal. And, Murray's off -ice accomplishments have not gone unnoticed by the rest of the league either. Tomorrow night (June 22), the NHL will hand out their year-end awards, and Rem Murray is nominated for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, awarded to a player who displays qualities of perseverance and sports- manship. - Of all therasfls to switch to TD Canada .Trust, this one fits in your hand.
