Boys' rugby team has strong showing at OFSAA
Jennifer Hubbard
St. Anne's rugby teams have
claimed their place among Ontario's
best.
• The senior boys team had success-
ful showings at last week's Ontario
Federation of Schools Athletic
Association (OFSAA) champi-
onships in Markham and
Walkerton.
Coach Glen Ditner said he was
proud of his team's accomplish-
ments and that they achieved their
goals for the.season.
"We toured in March and played
in tournaments to get better and
that showed in our league play," he
commented.
"We were 4-0 in the regular season
and undefeated at Huron -Perth and
WOSSAA. Our main goal was to get
back to OFSAA and we did that."
Seeded 10th going into the provin-
cial tournament, the St. Anne's boys
dominated play over seventh -seed
Eden High School, of St.
Catharines, to claim the 20-10 win.
Moving onto the quarter -finals,
the Eagles face second seed Trenton.
At the end of regular time, the two
teams were tied at zero and headed
into a kickoff. Both teams had suc-
cessful kicks in round one, but St.
Anne's lost in the second round
eliminating them from the tourna-
ment.
"We had our chances to win, but it
just didn't happen," Ditner said.
"We dominated the first half and
Trenton had the second. It was a
close game, but in different halves.
We came within inches of getting to
play in a medal game."
The senior boys team will wrap up
its season this weekend as it hosts a
squad from Perth, Scotland. The
Scotland school hosted St. Anne's
players during their tour abroad
last March.
A game between the two schools is
planned for Saturday at 11 a.m.
Spectators are welcome.
With seven of his current 15
starters leaving, Ditner predicted
he'd have his "hands full next year."
Girls' rugby team opt to step down from OFSAA
competition after death of Walkerton player
•Jennifer Hubbard
Winning one of two preliminary
games at OFSAA, the St. Anne's
girls' squad finished second , in its
pool, before dropping out due to a
tragedy.
Seeded seventh, the girls beat out
10th seed Mentor College 42-0, but
fell to second seed Sacred Heart 27-
10.
"We qualified to go on, but as a
team we agreed to drop out," coach
Ryan Clancy explained, adding host
school Sacred Heart, of Walkerton,
lost one of its players in a fatal car
accident.
"Members of the St. Anne's team
played with her on a Summer
Games team," Clancy said.
The Eagles, finished their 2006
season with a 15-1 record.They
scored a total of 412 points, and had
only 37 points against.
In May, the girls defeated South
Huron_ 37-0 and F.E. Madill, of
Wingham, 15-5 to claim the Huron -
Perth title.
