Seaforth cancer support
group celebrates its 10th year

A year after moving to
Seaforth from a big city five
hours away, Marion received
the devastating news she had
breast cancer.
With no family or friends
close by, she spent her days
after the diagnosis looking
into her mirror repeating the
words, "I have cancer, I have
cancer," until she could say
them without crying.
And, while her battle with
cancer is not yet over, Marion
says her "salvation" was find-
ing the Seaforth cancer sup-
port group, which marks its
10th year in operation this
year.
"I was new here and I didn't
know a soul. (Facilitator)
Joan (Chesney) was my salva-
tion. She came trotting over
to my house with an informa-
tion package and this group
became my holding hand,"
says Marion.
"If these girls hadn't been
here, I don't know how I
would have survived," she
says. -
The Seaforth cancer sup-
port group is an offshoot of
Huron Hospice and offered in
partnership with the
Canadian Cancer Society.
It has met every month for
10 ` years at the Seaforth
Manor with facilitators
Shirley Dinsmore, of Huron
Hospice and Joan Chesney, a:
breast cancer survivor, whose
aim continuesto be giving
emotional sup-
port to cancer
patients and
their family and
friends.
