Tour could benefit more than just Huron East, says Doig
From Page 1
In a phone interview, Doig
explained the process she and Agar
have gone through thus far in hopes
of securing a golf tournament in the
future.
"We approached the deputy com-
missioner of the Canadian Tour to
see if they would be interested in
coming to Seaforth, and they said if
we can put it all together there's no
reason why they wouldn't come,"
she said.
"They will hold a date open for us
for August, 2008. We have a year
and a half and a little bit to show
them we have the capability of host-
ing such an event," said Doig.
She added that if Seaforth secures
the tournament, Agar will become
the tournament's chair.
The Canadian Professional Tour is
considered the third echelon of pro-
fessional golf, behind the nation-
wide and PGA tours.
The ripple effect from hosting such
a tournament on the Seaforth com-
munity and surrounding area would
easily be the greatest benefit from
hosting a tournament, Doig pointed
out.
"There will be 156 players here -for
four days, day and night," she said.
"That's also 144 caddies, the play-
er's wives and family and friends."
Doig said when the Canadian Pro
tournament
came to London
they drew
crowds around 5-
10,000.
"And they're
all going to be
walking and
shopping on
Main Street,"
she added.
Doig said that
the event would
also bring addi-
tional attention
to the area
through televi-

sion and newspaper coverage.
"It (the coverage) won't be like
Stanley Cup coverage, but more like
Memorial Cup coverage," Doig said.
"The primary media coverage
would reach 75,000 people. And
every time Seaforth comes up, our
community is given some much-
needed publicity."
The largest obstacle in the way for
organizers is raising both the seed
money to get the ball rolling and
also enough money to cover the
$150,000 purse required to host the
tournament.
Doig is hoping not just Seaforth
and Huron East get involved, but
all of the surrounding municipali-
ties and communities.
"Because Seaforth has limited
resources we want to draw in all of
Huron and Perth," she said.
"We're hoping to generate the
money from a number of things, but
we are going to have to be creative.
We'll be doing fundraising, have raf-
fles and use revenue from golf tour-
naments we hold."
"But obviously we're hoping for
community donations," added Doig.
For area businesses, Doig said the
option to become a corporate spon-
sor would be available, whereas by
donating money towards the gener-
al financing of the tournament, Doig
said as an exam-
ple, a company
could have their

Doig said they have been in con-
tact with the Huron -Perth
Healthcare Alliance, and would like
to donate their revenue to the
Alliance, so the money could be used
towards the purchase of a new
imaging system for the Seaforth
Community Hospital.
"That would benefit not just
Seaforth,- but the greater Huron
East area," said Doig.
The presentation by Doig and Agar
was warmly welcomed by Huron
East councillors.
"I think you should be applauded,"
said Brussels Coun. David Blaney.
"It's a wonderful idea that will
help bind the community together."
"It sparked my interest right away
because you didn't ask for any
cash," joked Mayor Joe Seili.
Doig said from now until the sum-
mer of 2008 organizers will be kept
busy trying to pull everything
together. Doig said they will soon be
putting together packages for local,
area and regional businesses that
include what the event is all about,
the costs involved and how they can
help.
During her presentation to council
Doig acknowledged that pursuing a
pro golf tournament is a large step
for not just the Seaforth Golf and
Country Club, but the surrounding
area.
"Some people have been asking me
why shoot for the moon, and I just
tell them `If you're aiming for the
moon you're not going to shoot your
foot off'
"This tournament is a great way to
get people to experience our commu-
nity," Doig said.
"We're going to accentuate what
we have and give them a rural expe-
rience."
