`Pie insurance' contributes $100 towards Lions pool

went by just looking at us, wonder-
ing what we were doing," said
Danica.
The McNichols said they had so
much fun, they think it should hap-
pen again next year.
"It was so much fun - very social,"
she said.
Susan and Tony Arts, who spent
most of the 24 hours in shifts on
Main Street, said the event was
"awesome."
Side by side with Tucker's Meats,
the Seaforth Bakery, Blooms 'n
Rooms and the transplanted Freeze
King, those representing the north-
west block of businesses spent the
night playing
poker, shooting
each other with
water guns and
silly string and
trying to trick
each other out of
their chairs to
pay the $10 fine.
"Tuck (Doug
Fry) and his
motorized scoot-
er had to be the
best," said
Christine
Behnke, of the
Seaforth Bakery.
"He remained
seated touring
up and down
Main Street vis-

ing people," she said.
"And, Judy (Jansen of Freeze
King) owes about $1.6 million in
fines because she kept getting out of
her chair," said Arts.
"I don't owe a million - maybe
$50," responded Jansen.
She said she was forced out of her
chair a few times by water and silly
string and once she fell out, break-
ing her chair.
"This was great, lots of fun. I'm a
little tired but I thought it was for a
good cause," she said.
Gayle Coleman, manager of
Desjardins Credit Union and Pete
Martene, of Pete's Paper Clip, joked
that they were glad they didn't live
in the "rowdy" part of town, north of
John Street.
"We were living in fear that we'd
get hit by a giant Super Soaker.
North of John Street was where all
the mischief was taking place. We
call this (south of John Street) the
best part of town," laughed
Coleman.
"I would do this again in a
minute. People just gave and gave -
sometime or other, the pool's affect-
ed everyone in town," said Coleman.
Both Coleman and Martene took
the challenge seriously enough to
spend the entire 24 hours on the
street.
"Go big or - stay home," said
Martene.
Besides the water guns, Harry
den Haan added to the mischief fac-
tor by threatening pies in the faces
of participants around 3 a.m.
The pie moneymaker, which
raised about $100 for the Lions
Pool, involved a $10 donation for pie
insurance (protecting against a pie
in the face) to den Haan's contribu-
tion for the pool or a $10 donation
from den Haan to whomever
received the pie in the face.
"I thought it was fun but I'm not
sure they did," said den Haan.
"I thought 3 a.m. would be about
the time of day they'd be close to
sleep. This was a sit-a-thon, not a
sleep-a-thon, afterall," he said.
Mary Little, of the TD -Canada
Trust, said she was enjoying sitting
under an umbrella visiting with
passersby.
"This has been great. It's an
unusual fundraiser but I'd do it
again as long as I had the day shift,"
she said, adding that her kids and
grandkids have used the Lions Pool.
Brenda
Campbell, of
Coldwell Banker
Realty, who also
stayed up the
whole 24 hours,
was dragging
during the last
few hours.
Positioned on
the corner of
Main Street and
Highway 8,
Campbell and
Sandra Dale
were answering
questions all
night from trav-
ellers who won-
dered what was
going on. They
finally printed
out a sign that
said "Sit-a-thon"
and hung it on
the corner.
Winner of the
challenge was
Christine
Behnke, who
raised over
$2,800.
"The Seaforth
community
should be very
proud of them-
selves for sup-
porting and rais-
ing such a large
amount of money
for the Seaforth
Lions Pool," said
Arts.
