bats have been found in Huron County.
Rabies spreads easily through bats because
they often bite each other and transmit the
virus through their saliva.
The U.S. National Centre for Infectious
Disease (CDC) said most of the recent human
rabies cases in the United States have been
caused by bats.
The CDC has advice on dealing with bats
and rabies at
http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvrd/rabies/bats_&
rabies/bats&.htm.
Because bat teeth are so small, bites are
often undetectable.
You could be sound asleep and the bat could
land on you, Scharfe said.
Signs of rabid bats include activity during
the day, activity around people and difficulty
flying.

Health unit warns'public
of first rabid skunk this year
Marc H u l e t
Tests have confirmed that a dead skunk was
infected with rabies, according the Huron
County Health Unit.
The skunk got into an altercation with a pet
rabbit near Brussels recently and was killed
by the rabbit's owners.
The incident occurred on a farm, according
to public health manager Pamela Scharfe, and
all the animals have been quarantined
because they may have come in contact with
the skunk.
Everyone living on the farm received rabies
shots because they came in contact with the
rabbit after the altercation with the skunk.
If they had called (the health unit) when
they first saw the skunk acting strangely, we
could have come and avoided all this, Scharfe
said.
This was the first confirmed case of rabies
in Huron County in about a year. Scharfe said
the most common animals to contract rabies
in Huron County are skunks, foxes, raccoons
and bats.
Although the skunk in this case was killed,
it may have previously come in contact with
other animals spread throughout a large area
of Huron County.
People should not let their guard down in
regards to rabies, Scharfe said.
If anyone witnesses a wild animal acting
strangely, they are asked to contact the Huron
County Health Unit at 519-482-3416 or toll-
free 1-877-837-6143.
It is not uncommon for nocturnal animals
infected with rabies to be active during the
day or hanging out near busy areas.
They can also act aggressively or be lethar- ,
gic, Scharfe said.
If someone comes in contact with a
wild animal and is bitten or
scratched, they are asked to contact
the health unit and see a doctor. The
same can be said for pets.
Scharfe said it is vital that people
vaccinate their pets for rabies.
Its a terrible way for them to die,
she said.
In fact, there is a provincial law
stating that all pet owners must vac-
cinate their pets, or they could be
fined. Pets can even receive a vac-
cine good for three years, as opposed
to the annual shot.
The best bet though, Scharfe said,
is to not let your animal roam free.
It really is a matter of life and
death for people. By the time
humans start to exhibit signs of a
rabies infection it is often too late.
Rabies in humans can be fatal,
Scharfe said.
She added that vaccines for rabies
are not nearly as painful for humans
as they used to be.
It's really like getting a flu shot,
Scharfe added.
People also need to be aware the
danger is not just outdoors.
The health unit strongly advises
