FHT business plan submitted
to Health Ministry last week
Susan Hundertmark
io
The business plan for the family health
team (FHT) for Seaforth was sent to
the Ministry of Health by courier
two days past the May 23 dead-
line because the document was
too big to email.
"It's a large document with a
lot of appendices and it kept
bouncing back from the ministry
on Tuesday night. It was so thick
it. crashed my computer. But, the
ministry is quite fine with our
timelines," says FHT steering
committee co-chair Deb Hunt.
While the business plan was
not shared with. Huron East
council, as requested, before
being submitted to the province,
Hunt says a meeting will be set up
between the steering comrhittee, Huron East
council, Central Huron council and local
physicians to discuss it.
"We need to sit down and talk about what
should and shouldn't be in the plan," she says,
adding that the province understands that
the submitted business plan is a "draft."
"We want to make sure we have a business
plan we can all live with and
work with," says Hunt.
Hunt says she's not certain
when to expect a response about
whether or not the business
plan has provincial approval.
"That will depend on the nego-
tiations but we are hoping for `.
early approval," she says.
Once it's approved, the FHT
business plan becomes a public
document, says Hunt.
Huron East economic develop-
ment officer Ralph Laviolette
says that while he's seen "a doc-
ument," he says the business
plan is still in discussion.
"Optimism is strong that it will all work out
to a win around everybody but that's a few
weeks away," he said Monday.

Women Today joins campaign to
help community stop woman abuse
Women Today of Huron
(WTH) has joined a province -
wide campaign designed to
engage community members
to take steps to end abuse
against women.
The campaign is aimed at
friends, family and neigh-
bours of women and their
children who are experienc-
ing abuse and encourages
them not to be afraid to com-
municate their willingness to
help in these situations.
As a kick-off to the cam-
paign, WTH will be premier-
ing a short documentary,
Neighbours, Friends and
Families: What Everyone
Should Know About Woman
Abuse, at its annual general
meeting, June 1, at the
Huron County Museum start-
ing at 6 -p.m.
The documentary high-
lights the story of Sandra
Schott who was murdered by
her husband Edward Schott
before he committed suicide
near Dorchester, Ont. The
couple lived in Ingersoll with
their three children,
Through Sandra's work as a
personal support worker in
Ingersoll, a co-worker and
close friend tells how she saw
the signs of abuse but didn't
know what ;to do.
Sandra's sister-in-law looks
back on the couple's relation-
ship and can now see that
Edward qualified for 18 of the
19. risk factors of an abuser.
"Had I known, she would not
have been left alone...she
would be here."
"I am so pleased to be able
to show this moving docu-
mentary at our AGM. I
hope it will inspire peo-
ple to become more
informed about violence
in relationships so that
we can allrespond
effectively when we
know about or suspect
violence in the lives of
our family members,
friends, and even our
neighbours" said Pam
Hanington, executive
director of Women
Today of Huron.
Through the docu-
mentary, a panel of
experts highlights even
simple things friends or
neighbours can do to
help by letting the
woman know they sup-
port her, or by placing a
pamphlet for the local
women's shelter in her
car when they know
she will be the one to
see it.
Making the choice to
step forward to put an
end to violence helps to
contribute to a healthi-
er and safer society.
Everyone is welcome
to attend the screening of the
documentary to lend support
towards ending violence in
our communities.
