News United Way's Amazing Race still needs contestants No teams from Seaforth area have signed up yet Jeff H e u c h e r t ent locations, across 8,000 acres, where at . Although she is hoping more teams will still sign up before the event, Huron United Way's Amazing Race will go ahead on June 24 no matter how many teams they have, said Kim Payne, executive director of the Huron United Way. • "There is no way we'd cancel the race. It's an expensive thing to run and we've already put a lot of money into it," she said. "We're up to about 15 teams, but we're a long way from the 30 we want. We'd like a mini- mum of 20 if possible," she said last week, noting that no teams from Seaforth have reg- istered. Huron United Way's first Amazing Race was held last October, and had 23 teams, each rac- ing for the $1,500 top prize. The event raised $19,000. Payne said their goal for this year is to raise about the same, although it will be difficult with fewer teams. "If we can raise $20,000, it will have been an absolute success." Payne says they just need to get the word out there about the race, and that it probably appeals to a wide range of the public. "You don't have to be an athlete to do this. You just have to want to have fun," she said. Like last time, teams must come up with a $500 entrance fee to register for the race. Payne said by getting pledges from friends and family the entrance fee was no problem for teams to produce last year. "We had some teams that were well into the $2,000-3,000 range," she said. Payne said teams will race to several differ - each they'll be tested, either with a physical or mental challenge. Along the way, they will be challenged by detours that give two choices for completing a task, fast -forwards that allow teams to go directly to the next pit stop, roadblocks that require just one member to perform a task, or yields that delay either themselves or another team. Last year competitors started the race in Goderich, and made stops in Wingham, Blyth, Clinton, Seaforth, Hensall, Exeter, Grand Bend and Bayfield, while performing different tasks such as solving puzzles, racing through obstacle courses on wheelchairs, singing karaoke and jumping into an icy lake. "This year the activities are going to be more challenging," she said. "It's going to be incred- ible." New this time around will be the involve- ment of CKNX radio station in Wingham, which towards the end of the race will broad- cast the where -a -bouts of the contestants so that the public can make their way to the fin- ish line to watch. As well, organizers will be stopping by the morning show at the A Channel in London on June 16, were they'll put the show's hosts through a challenge and promote the race. Payne said no matter how many teams they end up with, when the race takes place on June 24, it will be a success. "The teams signed up so far are pumped. I haven't seen anything like it before," she said. Interested contestants can contact the Huron United Way at 524-7900 or visit their website at www.huron.unitedway.ca to learn more about the race and how to register.
