Seaforth travel
soccer teams
kick off
new season
Jeff Heuchert
The travel soccer season has kicked off, with Seaforth
being represented by U11 and U13 coed teams- in the
North Huron Soccer League.
John Taylor has returned for his second year in coach-
ing the U11 team.
He says in their first two games this season, the U11
team has won by a combined score of 18-0.
"We have a lot of 11 year olds that have played for
quite some time," says Taylor, adding, "and they really
know what they're doing."
But if the first two games are any indication as to how
strong the U11 team is offensively, the same can be said
for their defence and goaltending, which is yet to allow
a goal against.
Taylor says the team is extremely confident right now,
but he doesn't want his players getting too confident.
"I don't mind them losing a game here and there. I t
keeps them on an even keel," he says.
Another concern says Taylor, is that his team will not
play all of the 15 teams in their division during the .reg-
ular season, which consists of only nine games, due to a
bye in their schedule.
"It's kind of early to say how we're going to do because
usually there's some strong teams that come out of
Clinton and Goderich, and we won't face some of them
until the playoffs."
At the same time, Taylor says it could work to their
advantage not playing some of the stronger teams dur-
ing the regular season.
"I don't know if it's a disadvantage. If w,e haven't
played and lost to a team already, we won't be thinking
about that if we play them again," he points out.
The year-end playoffs run during the week of July 17,
says Taylor.
Last year the U11 team lost in the quarter finals, so
Taylor is hoping for a better result this time around.
"I don't really know how we'll do. We have a good
team, but anything is possible."
As for Seaforth's U13 team, coach Gerry Gibbs says
while his team has gotten off to a 04-1 start, they have
played much better than their record states.
"We had a great come back, but fell just short," he
says, referring to their second game of the season,
where they almost rallied to tie a game they were losing
by three at half.
