"Old Time County Fair" including amusement
rides and talent show coming to Hensall June 10
Crystal Stewart
Hensall is holding an "Old Time
County Fair" this spring, providing
kids and families with a day of
entertainment and food.
The June 10 event opens with a
talent show, leading into the
Ambassador, Prince and Princess
competition.
After lunch, mini tractor pull reg-
istration and competition begins.
Clowns are coming to provide
some afternoon entertainment and
a Tinker Tots activity and play area,
"Old MacDonald's Farm" and
amusement rides are available all
day.
Homestyle family dinner
is being hosted by the
Hensall United Church
youth group in the evening
with music of the
Hartmans.
Best of all , fair admis-
sion is a non-perishable
item for the food bank.
Local students are
already busy preparing for
one of the more popular
fair events, the school vs.
school tug-of-war competi-
tion.
"All of these training
classes are leading up to
the tournament," says
Erich Freiter, a Bluewater
Tug -of -War representa-
tive, while at Zurich
Public School (ZPS) intro-
ducing the sport.
He says they want to
draw at least two teams
from each school, one girls
and one boys.
Leading classes in
warm-ups that include cal-
isthenics, stretching and
running, Freiter and other
Bluewater Tug -of -War
members teach the kids
technique and explain
rules.
Bob Redick, a teacher at
ZPS, says members have
been coming out for a
number of years and the
kids always respond well.
"They really get
enthused," he says. "It's
something very different,
something they've never
done before."
He says he sees students
getting involved that don't
usually take part in
sports, possibly because of
weight or fitness level.
"Here they excel if they
learn the technique," he
says, adding those at the opposite
,end of the spectrum, who are used
to being the stars, can also be sur-
prised.
"They'll find out that they can't do
anything on their own."
Redick recalls the first year the
sport was brought to the school, say-
ing four out of four times, the girls
pulled the boys team across the line.
It seems not much has changed,
when both girl teams put together
from the first group of students - to
shouts such as "we're gonna do this
girls, let's win" - quickly do the
same this time around.
"We rock, that was awesome" yells
one after the win.
The excitement for this sport is
clearly still in the air, with several
girls having already entered a team.
Courtney Campbell and Brittany
Smith put. together a team of
friends for "something fun to do"
this spring, saying they want to see
how their team will fare against
ones from others schools.
