Huron," said Horvat, who
asked if there was room in
the municipal building for an
office.
Peggy Elligsen, secretary,
suggested room three in the
upper level of the municipal
offices - where the PSB has
held meetings in the past - as
the room is not often used.
Mayor John
Van Bakel had
some concerns
over the times of
entry for the.
coordinator and
did not want to
commit to any-
thing until West
Perth council has
decided what
they are going to
do about a securi-
ty system for the
building.
"We are in pre-
liminary discus-
sion about a security system
for the building and how we
are going to be able .to rent it
out to people who currently
use it," said Van Bakel. If
Crime Stoppers said they just
want to use it during working
hours, then that would be
fine."
"I am not saying no or yes.
We (council) need to deter-
mine what our security sys-
tem is going to be like and
what rooms are available," he
said.

Perth, Huron Crime Stoppers
consider central site in Mitchell
Hilary Long
The effectiveness of the
Crime Stoppers coordinator
was discussed during the
May 10 meeting of the West
Perth Police Services Board
in Mitchell. -
Currently, Perth County
has a part-time Crime
Stopper
Coordinator,
Steve Beasley,
working out of
Gowanstown,
and is shared
with Huron
County.
Inspector
Zonk Horvat
said there have
been discussion
between Perth
and Huron
Counties to
have the coordi-
nator give equal
representation for
the two counties and being
centrally located, perhaps in
Mitchell.
The Huron County office is
in Goderich.
The PSB was told Mitchell
and area would be the most
central location for an office.
The current Perth County
office in North Perth is not
really effective for the majori-
ty of Perth.

Elligsen noted if Crime
Stoppers was at the munici-
pal building it might help
improve the security.
"The van will be parked
there. If it is right here we
will have a lot more visibility
and that would be better," she
said.
OPP Sgt. Doug French said
he would like to see the office
located in Mitchell and not
out in any of the wards.
"The visibility of having the
van parked in Mitchell would
be a positive," he said, adding
the town is centrally located
in Perth and Huron. "I see no
negatives from this."
Coun. Larry Wight agreed
that it is an excellent idea,
noting there are many empty
offices located throughout
Mitchell.
However, Horvat said the
Crime Stoppers program is
self-sufficient and would look
for an office that would be
free of charge. He said the
office does not have to be big.
"They need to be able to
lock up and use it specifically
for their needs, due to the
sensitivity of the files," he
said.
"Discussing it logistically, it
makes no sense to have it
where it is," Horvat said,
adding, "It comes down to
how do we work together to
make to program suit our
needs, our Communities
needs. Basically it is a great
program and is
very successful in
