County's flag policy -questioned by two Huron reeves
Mark Nonke8
Conflict was sparked at Huron
County council last week after two
muncipal heads questioned the
county's flag policy following the
death of Cpl. Matthew Dinning of
Wingham.
County buildings did not lower
their flags following the death of
Dinning, one of four Canadian sol-
diers killed in a roadside attack in
Afghanistan last month.
Both the municipalities of North
Huron and Morris-Turnberry flew
their flags at half mast after the
incident.
"We lowered our flags as soon as
we heard about it," said North

Huron reeve Doug Layton.
"We didn't hesitate," added
Dorothy Kelly, reeve of Morris-
Turnberry.
Both municipal leaders wanted to
know why the county didn't take
the same position.
"Our Member of Parliament, Paul
Steckle is very upset," Layton said.
"He's a firm believer in the flag."
County CAO Larry Adams
explained the flag flew high because
of the county's tie-in with the feder-
al flag policy. Ottawa also did not
lower the flag after the incident.
"If we had a lot more of these hap-
pening would we ever have the flag
up," wondered Coun. Bernie
MacLellan.

"You're stepping on sacred ground
here in my mind."
Warden Rob Morley suggested the
Warden's task force take a closer
look at the issue.
"You need to walk a very fine line
because there's a lot of families who
have lost children in car accidents."
Tiger Dunlop tomb
Huron County has stepped up
with $10,000 for restoration work
on the Tiger Dunlop Tomb.
The effort to revitilize the tomb -
site on the bluffs of the Maitland
River suggested stone masonry to
fix the walls of the tomb and new
signage for the site.

Ed Cunningham, who led the effort
to bring more attention to the tomb.
Cunningham added that Dunlop's
legacy is something Goderich and
area should celebrate more often.
Dunlop was one of the first set-
tlers of Huron and one of the first to
clear the Huron Tract. He was also
Goderich's first mayor and an early
member of parliament for the dis-
trict.
Records manager
Huron County council approved
the hiring of a records manager for
a two-year contract position.
The manager will be paid $55,000
per year and report to -the museum
curator. Funding for the position
will come from the county's contin-
gency reserve.
