Staffa teen earns ticket to B.C.
for Canadian Plowing Championship
Jeff Heuchert
Who would have thought being able to
effectively plough a field would be Bill
Feeney's ticket to outside of Ontario for the
first time in his life.
The 17 -year-old Staffa student earned the
opportunity to
travel to
Chilliwack, B.C.
to compete in the
Canadian
Plowing
Championships
this past April,
after winning his
class at the
International
Plowing
Championships
this past fall in
Listowel.
And Feeney
didn't disappoint
in B.C., finishing
second in the
junior class,
earning the title
of Reserve Grand
Champion.
Feeney says
after his success
in Listowel, he
was confident he could compete with the best
in Canada.
"I thought I could do pretty good, but I
didn't think I would do that good, he admits.
"It was great."
His win in Listowel and second place finish
in Chilliwack have been the best results
Feeney has had in competitive plowing, since
he started competing at a fairly early age.
"I was 10 when I started competing in coun-
ty matches. I wasn't that good when I was
young, but I worked my way up," he says.
Like anything else, Feeney says practising
has helped him get to where he is today. He's
also been coached by Huron County
Plowmen's Association member George
Townsend.
Townsend flew to Chilliwack, in the Fraser.
Valley, with Feeney. His grandparents also
made the trip, by car, to watch him compete.
Feeney says one
of the highlights
from the trip was
when some of the
competitors visit-
ed a native
reserve, where
they stayed for
supper.
The other high-
light came at the
end of the week-
long event when,
along with other
competitors,
Feeney helped
coach a partici-
pant in a special
celebrity class
competition,
which included
politicians like
the mayors of
Chilliwack and
Vancouver.
Feeney helped
coach Federal Agriculture Minister Chuck
Strahl, who coincidently, won the class.
"They just came out and picked a tractor to
use and he picked mine," he says.
Feeney adds the only advice he gave him
was, "keep straight."
For finishing second at the Nationals, aside
from a trophy, a coat and hat, Feeney was
given a $3,000 scholarship for two^ years
towards any college or university, to be used
when the time comes.
He is currently attending St. Michael
Catholic Secondary School in Stratford.

Health Unit asks for help detecting West Nile
Starting -May 15, Huron County residents
are being asked to help detect West Nile Virus
in the community by reporting the location of
dead crows and blue jays to the Huron County
Health Unit.
Crows and blue jays are very sensitive to
West Nile Virus. They get the virus from
infected mosquitoes the bugs bite the birds.
We check dead crows and blue jays to find
out how West Nile is affecting Huron County.
People reporting the location of dead crows
and blue jays are asked to contact the health
unit at (519) 482-3416 or toll-free at 1-877-
837-6143. Ask for Extension 2001.
Callers are asked to leave their name,
phone number and full address (including 911
number and postal code). Please be sure to
describe the bird's location.
Remember, the best way to reduce mosqui-
toes is to control the areas where they breed.
"Look around your home, cottage or busi-
ness, and clean up places that are potential
mosquito breeding sites," says Public Health
Inspector Paul Dawson.
"Piles of leaves, clogged eaves troughs, tires,
rubbish, and debris may all collect water and
become a mosquito breeding ground."
Turn over containers that may collect water,
or drill holes into them. Some mosquitoes only
need a cup of water to breed in.
