Seaforth native settles in NWHL
after years of hockey abroad
Jeff Heuchert
It may not have been the
finish to the season she was
hoping for, but Seaforth
native Kathy Devereaux
is still happy- with a sec-
ond place finish in her
second season in the
National Women's Hockey
League (NWHL).
Devereaux's team, the
Brampton Thunder, were
victorious at both the
provincials and nationals,
but fell one goal short in
the NWHL championship_
over the Easter weekend.
"We really wanted the
sweep," she says,.refer-

masters in biotechnology,
which she now has, along
with a job in Mississauga.
Prior to joining the NWHL,
Devereaux travelled
around the world for not
just hockey, but schooling
as well.
After high school, she
spent four years at the
University of Calgary
where she played with the
Calgary Oval Extreme in
the Western Women's
Hockey League.
While attending uni-
versity, Devereaux partici-
pated in the Three Nations
Cup, as a member of the
Canadian U22 National
team.
It was during these
four years that Devereaux
says she gained much
more than four years of
experience.
"The U22 camps were
the best level of hockey I've
ever played at, but my
Calgary team was an
extremely high caliber as
well."
Twenty-six-year-old
Devereaux admits that
because they had already
beaten Montreal, the loss was
tougher to swallow.
But, she says at the same
time, the loss has acted as
motivation for next season.
"It was frustrating because
this was going to potentially
be the last season for some of
our players, but now most of
the players say they're going
to return next year."
Another Seaforth native,
Jessica Finlayson, was on the
ice, but opposite Devereaux,
on Montreal.
Devereaux says as disap-
pointing as the loss was, it
was nice to know a Seaforth
player got to celebrate.
"It was great having anoth-
er Seaforthtonian out there."
Another familiar face to
women's hockey fans on the
ice was the Axion's goal -
tender, who was also the
Canadian Women's Olympic
goaltender, Charlene
Labonte.
"What it came down to was
us beating their goalie," she

with many Americans, play
in the NWHL.

teammates.
