Huron East questions why sewage
project turned down for funding
Susan H u n d e r t m a r k
Huron East council wants to complain "to anyone
who'll listen" about missing out on Canada -Ontario
Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (COMRIF) money
for the upgrading of the Vanastra sewage system.
Huron East applied for $480,000 in COMRIF funding
last year and $624,000 as the project expanded to
include a retention plant but was turned down both
times.
Council received a list of municipalities who were
approved this year for a grant whose criteria is outlined
as health and safety, public policy priorities and value
for money, specifying the reduction of greenhouse gas,
sustainable water and sewage systems, economic devel-
opment and increased waste diversion as examples.
Deputy -Mayor Bernie MacLellan said he didn't
understand why Huron East's sewage project had been
turned down when a $3.3 million grant to repair a
boulevard in Sudbury was approved.
"That's the one that burns me the most," he said.
Grey Coun. Mark Beaven wanted to know why bridge
and road repair projects are being funded under COM -
RIF.
"This doesn't make any sense to me. Are their gas tax
funds being reduced by this amount?" he said of the
three-quarters of the COMRIF grants assigned to roads
and bridges projects.
Beaven joked that maybe the roads and bridges led to
a dump or recycling centre.
Mayor Joe Seili said all the grants are going to com-
munities in eastern or northern Ontario.
"They're using municipalities as lotteries," said Seili.
He added he's asked Clerk -Administrator Jack
McLachlan to write letters to Huron -Bruce MP Paul
Steckle and Huron -Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell.
