Warm spring means early planting for area farms
Jeff H e u c h e r t
Huron County farmers are bene-
fitting from the unusually warm
temperatures over the past month,
that have left the soil in excellent
condition. •
Crop specialist for the Ontario
Ministry of Agriculture, Food and
Rural Affairs Peter Johnson says
between April 16-20 farmers were
able to take advantageof the dry
soil and plant their corn early.
"The soil condition is just excel-
lent, so certainly the bulk is already
done. I'd says it's about 75-90 per
cent done," says Johnson, adding.
that this leaves them ahead of
schedule.

The news many Roman Catholics
have been dreading came recently as
Bishop Ronald Fabbro announced
the permanent closure of 36 parish-
es — including St. Joseph's in
Clinton and English Martyrs
Mission in Bayfield — within the
boundaries of the London Diocese.
The closures are part of the largest.
reorganization in the 150 -year histo-
ry of the diocese, as it struggles with
an ongoing priest shortage, declining
attendance rolls, and aging build-
ings.
Because of mergers, only 25
church buildings will close, but
another 26 parishes are still under
review, and more closure decisions
are expected by the time the reorga-
nization is completed in 2008.
The Catholic parishes heard the
unwelcome news by Fabbro via a 10 -
minute video.
Other churches scheduled to close
in Huron -Perth include St. Joseph
(Kingsbridge), the St. Augustine
Mission (St. Augustine) and the St.
Mary Mission in Lucknow.
the corn will be done."
But, the dry soil conditions have
brought some worries for farmers as
well.
Johnson says farmers need to be
careful to not work their soil too
deep just yet, because if the soil was
to dry out it could be left without
enough moisture to effectively ger-
minate the seeds.
"If they work it (their soil) too
hard it could cost them," he says.
In addition, because of a fairly
mild winter, there is an added risk
of damage to farmers' crops due to
higher insect survival over the win-
ter.
"We don't like to .see european
chafer, army worms and alfalfa wee-
vil, but they are showing up more
frequently right now," says Johnson.
"Farmers just need to manage them
better this year, or they'll wish they
had."
The last week in April also
brought unusual temperatures as
the area suffered cold spells a few
nights, which Johnson says did
leave some frost damage on farmer's
wheat and orchard crops.
