With the recommendation of Clerk -Administrator Jack McLachlan, the municipality plans Huron East linked to seniors' site Huron East is linking up to a provincial web - page for seniors called seniorsinfo.ca. Seniors' Info was cre- ated to provide access to information and ser- vices delivered by all levels of government and community-based agencies serving older. adults and Huron East's webpage will. soon have a portal link- ing to the seniors' site. "I'm hoping we can get it up to speed by the end of May," says Huron East's economic development officer Ralph Laviolette. Twenty-two munici- palities with seniors' populations of more than 30 per cent were invited by the province to join the webpage. Huron East is one of less than 20 that received a $5,000 grant by the Ministry. of Social Services' Seniors' Directorate to join the Senior's Info webpage. "We're going to be calling everyone for information that describes local services that are particularly for seniors," says Laviolette. "If anyone is not list- ed now, they should give us a call." Laviolette says the webpage is very attrac- tive and contains infor- mation on community. resources, active living and leisure, finance, health and wellbeing, housing options and care facilities, legal matters, opportunities for learning, trans- portation and events. By Susan Hundertmark • to do a visual inspection of all of its buildings to look at which ones might need maintenance or safety improvements. I don't agree with a building inspection," said Tuckersmith Coun. Larry McGrath. "It's a waste of tax- payers' money. Ninety-nine per cent of our reportscome back and the first thing we do is nickel and dime it to death or just leave it alone." McGrath also complained that an engineer's assessment of a munici- pal building will not include the condition of furnaces or electrical systems. Grey Coun. Mark Beaven said the municipality needs to take invento- ry of its "brick and mortar" with an assessment of its condition. "The bridge reports helps me to prioritize and I would think these documents would help me do that as well," said Beaven. Deputy -Mayor Bernie MacLellan pointed out that an engineering firm may well subcontract the work to an electrician to look at electrical systems in a building. McKillop Coun. Sharon McClure agreed with McGrath, saying the employees of the municipality usu- ally have a good idea when work needs to be done on a municipal building. "What's Burns -Ross going to tell us that our own men can't?" she said. But, Brussels Coun. David Blaney responded that some necessary improvements might not be obvious. "It's conceivable there's a develop- ing problem that if caught now could save us some money. I think this study is a very good place to start," he said. McLachlan added the province will soon require municipalities to do asset management, which a building inspection will contribute towards. In a recorded vote that hired B.M. Ross to do the building inspection study, McGrath and McClure voted against the. motion and the rest of council voted in favour, except for Seaforth Coun. Joe Steffler who was absent.
