Summer exchange looking for students
who want to work and learn French
Jeff Heuchert
Students looking for sum-
mer employment who have a
passion for the French lan-
guage can fufill both needs
this summer in the same
place.
The Summer Work - Student
Exchange is looking for
enthusiastic 16 and 17 -year-
old students who would like
to participate in a student
exchange for six weeks this
summer with Francophone
students from Quebec or New
Brunswick.
Coordinator for the program
in the Perth -Wellington rid-
ing Cindy . McClure says they
are offering the program to
only five students from the
area, -so if anyone is interest-
ed, they should submit an
application as soon as possi-
ble before the June 2 dead-.
line.
Because the Bruce -Grey -
Owen Sound riding is not
involved with the program
this summer, Huron County
students interested can apply
through the Perth -Wellington
riding.
"For anyone who is interest-
ed in pursuing the French
language in their future, this
is an invaluable experience,
says McClure.
The selected students will
trade homes with a
Francophone student for six
weeks, where they will work
full-time jobs for a non-profit
organization.
McClure says the students
will get to participate in real-
world settings that will allow
them to improve their second
language and gain workexpe-
• rience.
During their stay each stu-
dent will live with the family
of the student with whom
they have been paired, in
either Quebec or New
Brunswick.
There are no costs to the
students, thanks to lull fund-
ing from the Department of
Canadian Heritage through
Exchanges Canada, which
also supplies grant money to
the employers so the students
can receive a minimum wage
salary for their work. The
transportation is provided by
Via Rail Canada.
This summer, the program
will provide 1,240 students
across Canada with the
opportunity.

program or for an application,

work.com, or contact Cindy

Stars from TVOKids
coming to Stratford
Jeff Heuchert
Kids will have the opportunity later this week to
dance, sing and play games with two of their
favourite stars from TVOKids.
Jackie and Mark from The Space will make their
next stop on the Don't Sit Still Tour at the Festival
Market Place Mall in Stratford this Saturday.
Kids will be entertained by a live stage show
which, according to a press release from TVOKids, is
to promote kids living an active lifestyle, which they
will promote through the message of healthy minds
and healthy bodies in Ontario kids.
Manager for the Festival Market Place Mall
Stephanie Currie says they're expecting around 600
people to attend the show and recommends parents
arrive early if they want a seat for their kids near
the stage. •
"It's a huge draw. ` I told my son who was coming
and he's gotten so excited," she says.
"It's an excellent show. It teaches them (the kids)
to take care of their bodies and eat well."
TVOKids has toured with the show across the
province since 1999. The event is free and begins at
4p.m. May 6.
