SPS put forth solid effort at bball tournament
They may have only practiced a few times,
but the team of Grade 5 and 6 students repre-
senting Seaforth Public School (SPS) at a
friendly basketball tournament in Brucefield
last week, played like a team.
The tournament, which was held at Huron
Centennial Public School April 27 during the
afternoon, welcomed 10 co-ed teams from var-
ious schools.
SPS finished the round robin with 2-1-1
record, tying them with another team for sec-
ond in their conference.
But, they did not qualify for the second
round because the team they were tied with
had allowed fewer points against in the round
robin.
Coach Ron Vercruyssen said he is very
proud of how the team played, considering the
level most of his players were at to begin.
"Most had played on the playground or a lit-
tle bit in gym,
but they'd had
nothing struc-
tured. They were
relatively inexpe-
rienced," he said.
SPS was handi-
ly defeated in
their first game
against Clinton
Public School,
but Vercruyssen
said the loss
awoke his play -

"It was a little bit of a learning lesson as to
what sort of commitment we needed to have,"
he said.
SPS went on to win their next two games
against Huron Centennial and another team
from Clinton Public before tying in a close
match with St. Joseph's, which Vercruyssen
calls a heartbreaker because they held the
lead throughout most of the game.
Vercruyssen said while his team wanted to
win, the most important thing was that the
kids enjoyed themselves.
"I think they had a good time. They put
forth a really good effort," he said.
"They were an excellent representation of
Seaforth Public School."
Vercruyssen adds that the tournament had
an overwhelming turnout, and could possibly
be held again next year. by JefHeuchert
