Local 4-H member among 30 who participate
in workshop and learn how to write press releases
Jeff Heuchert
In hopes of raising the pub-
lic's awareness to their organi-
zation, 4-11 members from
across the province took part
recently in a Media Masters
Workshop at the University of
Guelph, where they were
taught how to write effective
news releases. •
Amongst the 30 441 members
who : took part was 12 -year-old
Raina Vingerhoeds, a member
of the Staffa 4-H Club for the
past three years.
She says the idea was for the
members to leave the work-
shop with the skills, which
they could then apply to their
own clubs, communities and
countries.
Vingerhoeds first learned of
the opportunity throughan ad
she read in the
Perth County 4-
H newsletter.
She says prior
to this one,
most ads she'd
seen required
participants be
older.
"It was finally
something I
was old enough
for, and it
sounded fun,"
she says. "It
looked like
something I
could use."
The workshop
was taught by
agricultural communications
students at the University of
Guelph, over one day.
Participants learned how to
write using a proper news
Raina Vingerhoeds
release format,
how to conduct
an interview
and some tips
and tricks
used to write
an effective
release, she
says.
Vingerhoeds
put her new
found skills to
use after
attending a
Showmanship
Day at
Ridgetown
College in
Guelph last
week.
She wrote a news release for
it that will appearin the
Huron County 4-11 newsletter
in April.
But, Vingerhoeds is hoping 4-
11 newsletters are not the only
place her news releases will be
published.
"They (4-11) were thinking we
don't have enough coverage in
local newspapers," she says.
Vingerhoeds hopes to submit
releases to local newspapers,
and in -turn introduce 4-1-1 to
new people.
"That's what the whole pur-
pose for this masters workshop
was. 'Someone will see it (a
release) and think 'Oh, that's
cool. I might want to join.'"
Vingerhoeds is hoping she is
nominated for the position of
press reporter for the Staffa 4-
11 Club, but either way, will
keep writing news releases.
"I think it's kind of cool that I
can write something and it can
be published," she says.
