Business strong since Lager
House move to Commercial Hotel
Jeff Heuchert

If a steady flow of patrons
in recent weeks is, any indica-
tion, Donna Ellis' decision to
move her restaurant - The
Lager House Pub and Grill -
to the other end of Seaforth's
Main Street, was a good one.
"I think people were anx-
ious for us to re -open and
people can find us easier
now," says Ellis, who owns
what is now called The Lager
House Inn and Grill.
Ellis decided to pack up and
ship down the street when
her lease ran out at the old
location, which was near the
corner of Goderich and Main
Streets.
To her, although a signifi-
cant amount of money had to
be shelled out for renovations
at the new location, what was
once the Commercial Hotel,
the decision was a relatively
easy one.
"We have made so many
friends and our clientele has
risen. I wanted a bigger place
so we can hold wedding,
retirement, birthday and
anniversary parties," she
says.
At their old location, which
she operated from for four
years, Ellis says they could
hold a maximum of 84 people.
At their new location, their
maximum has risen to 234,
not including the seating an
outdoor patio will provide.
The square footage has
jumped from 1,000 at the old
location to 7,000 at the new.
"Our games room is actually
larger than the old Lager
House," she says.
"I'm going to be able to have
bands, dinner and comedy
theatre - something for every-
one."
Ellis says the. building had
to have extensive work done
on the inside before opening,
such as replacing the ceilings,
bathrooms and "just getting it
up to code."
The work was completed in
10 weeks, which Ellis says
would have never happened
without the help from mem-
bers in the community who
donated their time and.
efforts.
Ellis has made some slight
changes since changing loca-
tions. She now offers a
Sunday brunch the last week-
end each month, more spe-
cials, new items on the menu
and quicker service.
"We've become faster. But
our stuff is still fresh. We're
still taking our time," she
says.
Ellis has also increased
staff from eight to 15, and
expects she'll have to hire
more in the near•future,
Business has been strong
since re -opening, even though
the Lager House has not yet
obtained their liquor licence,
which should be on its way
within the next five weeks.
"I thank everyone for their
support. It's been phenome-
nal. I don't know how to
thank them," she says.
