"I don't see why we should have two rec cen- tres two and a half miles apart. It would be a heck of a good walk if you want the exercise," Glen Howling told Huron East council at its April 18 meeting. Howling, who has been organizing deamal- gamation meetings in the former Grey Township, appeared at Huron East council with a list of complaints about how the municipality is run. Central Huron is currently surveying users of the Clinton arena to determine if a new arena is needed to replace its 40 -year-old facility in Clinton. Howling said he'd like to see Clinton, Vanastra and Tuckersmith share costs for a recreation facility, "instead of being nipped for half a million dollars" in Huron East to upgrade the current Vanastra Rec Centre. Howling said- people in the Brussels area have to drive for 20 minutes to take advantage of recre- ation facilities in Wingham and Listowel. "It's a very valid point," agreed Grey Coun. Mark Beaven. But, Tuckersmith Coun. Bill DeJong argued that the people of Vanastra deserve to keep their own recreation facility. "The people of Vanastra built that facility long before amalgama- tion and I don't believe someone from Brussels or Grey should come along and say it shouldn't be there," said DeJong. Clerk -Administrator Jack McLachlan pointed out that no deci- sions have yet been made about whether or not a new recreation facility will be built in Vanastra. A committee in Vanastra is researching community opinion about how the rec centre should be improved after a public meeting sev- eral months ago where council sug- gested a 10 -year plan should be implemented to replace or repair the centre. Mayor Joe Seili said that despite the fact thousands of people from outside Central Huron patron- ize Clinton Slots, no one from out- side the municipality shares any of the profits. "They drop a lot of money there and we don't get a dime of that," he said, adding that everyone's taxes pay for services to combat gambling problems.
