Food Inspection speaker educates society
members on tree: pests. with slide show
Seaforth and District
Horticultural Society met April 12
in Northside United Church.
Janny Streutker welcomed every-
one and read a poem "Gardening."
Margaret DeJong introduced.
speaker Brian Hamilton from the
food inspection agency . speaking on
"tree pests." He showed slides of
"Invasion of Alien Species." He
talked mostly about the Emerald
ash borer, which has come from
Asia and Michigan. It is very hard
to detect.
If you see a D shape on the bark,
'the insect has already left the tree.
Pesticides are
costly and not
yet registered.
Some borers,
Sirex Wood Wasp
are found around Cambridge and
attack pine trees. Sudden oak death
is spread by water, soil and air.
Phytrophthoro causes cankers and
girdles the trees.
Janny took the chair and Bea
Stoll read the minutes of the March
meeting. Dilys Finnigan gave the
treasurer's report. Nancy Kale gave
a report of the board meeting Feb.
13.
