Janny Streutker welcomed every- one and read a poem "Gardening." Margaret DeJong introduced. speaker Brian Hamilton from the food inspection agency . speaking on "tree pests." He showed slides of "Invasion of Alien Species." He talked mostly about the Emerald ash borer, which has come from Asia and Michigan. It is very hard to detect. If you see a D shape on the bark, 'the insect has already left the tree. Pesticides are costly and not yet registered. Some borers, Sirex Wood Wasp are found around Cambridge and attack pine trees. Sudden oak death is spread by water, soil and air. Phytrophthoro causes cankers and girdles the trees. Janny took the chair and Bea Stoll read the minutes of the March meeting. Dilys Finnigan gave the treasurer's report. Nancy Kale gave a report of the board meeting Feb. 13. Astrid sold 10 hats and three aprons at the booth April 15. Margaret checked on Dr. Whitman's tree and she think it is still alive. A Life membership was given to Beatrice Stoll. Dorothy Papple is to receive a service certificate but she was not there. Corry Klaver attended the annual meeting in Teeswater April 1 which 164 people attended. Paul Sammit was the speaker. White carnations were given for deceased members, 25 from. District #8. Corry brought one home for Vivienne Newnham as Robert had passed away. There have been four trees plant- ed in the Peace Garden behind the school. Door prizes were drawn and Brenda McIntosh and Grace Jansen served lunch.
