Concert raises $5,000 for Huron
Perth chapter of Autism Society
Paul Cluff
Local musicians did their thing
with some special guests Saturday at
the Jamming for Autism Concert at
the Victorian Inn on the Park in
Stratford.
Canadian country guitar champion
Steve Piticco and North American
fiddle champion Don Reed joined
Samson and Delilah, the Brad
Canning Band: the Yeager Band and
three Stratford Idol contestants —
Emma Hefkey and Jessica and
Ashley Woodhouse — for a night of
music and fun that raised about
$5,000 for the Huron Perth Chapter,
Autism Society Ontario.
Kim Souch, president of the chap-
ter, said the annual event, in its
third year, is perfect for getting fami-
lies together in a positive environ-
ment with talented musicians.
Holding it on Easter weekend and
raising money for a cause that means
much to many only make it better,
she said.
"Everything went fabulously, there
was so much energ," she said.
Her daughter, Sara Sobey-Souch, a
high -functioning autistic, also per-
formed. She sang Over the Rainbow
a capella.
"One of the messages of the concert
is seeing the gifts that people with
autism have," said Souch.
The concert sold out and was again
taped live.
Funds raised through the concerts
have been used to fund a new office
in Stratford and autism -related
resource books.
The books are for families and oth-
ers and cover a broad range of prod-
ucts. They are being stored at the
Stratford Public Library.
"The office is great, because it
helps parents out and it provides
access for families," said Souch.
Located at the United Centre on
Erie Street, the office has been open
for about a year, but has really come
together in the past few months.
The local Autism Society is plan-
ning a workshop May 17 that focuss-
es on navigating the education sys
tem. More details will follow, said
Souch.
