Originally organized as the Slice of Huron 12 years ago, the three- day festival evolved to include a half-day of water conservation activities two years ago when the agricultural festival began to lose popularity. "It's now two festivals in one - that's how it's evolved," said orga- nizer Steve Bowers. "It's a good partnership. Both agriculture and water are very important issues in the com- munity. They complement each other," he said. On the agricultural side, beef, pork, poultry, dairy and field crops producers volunteer their time to educate Grade 4 students about agriculture, giving kids a chance to see a cow milked, feed a baby calf, hold baby chicks and view sows and their piglets and beef cattle. On the water side, students are taught about water quality and conservation, getting the opportunity to see how many bottles of water would be housed inside their bodies using a w ate r teeter-tot- ter and viewing the impurities picked up. by a water droplet as stu- dents roll on mats represent- ing the lawns, roads and soil water travels through. "It's obvious that water is a pretty important resource and has to be looked after," said Bowers. Up from last year's participa- tion by 100 stu- dents, the festi- val has volun- teers who have worked hard to fundraise enough to allow schools to forgo any reg- istration fee and to benefit from a $100 busing grant.
