News Seaforth Lions halfway to $50,000 goal for pool renovation project Susan H u n d e r t m a r k With half of the $50,000 goal fundraised already, work is scheduled to begin this week on renovations to Lions Pool, says organizer Bob Beuttenmiller. "The fundraising is coming well. We've raised $25,000, which is super: good - we're halfway," says Beuttenmiller. He says cheques started to flow the day the Huron Expositor published its first story about the pool project in February. "Two people phoned that day - they wanted me to pick up their cheques right away," he says. Beuttenmiller says quite a number of cheques have been written for $1,000 each. "I'm not surprised that people are being so generous. The Lions pool has been established for so long that there have been a lot of swim- ming lessons, picnics and good times there," he says. Huron East's donation of $5,000 is also generous, says Beuttenmiller. "They've shown they're committed to the project with one-tenth of what we need and that kicks things off for us," he says. A Trillium Foundation grant of $40,000 was also announced Monday towards the Lions pool, particularly aimed at the safety and accessibility of the pool for peo- ple with disabilities. Part of the $225,000 project involves making the pool more accessible with ramps at the stairway leading into the pool and a removable set of stairs that will allow anyone having :difficulty with the ladders to walk into the pool. Beuttenmiller says the Lions asked for $75,000 but he's still thrilled.with $40,000, saying that the Trillium Foundation gets hundreds of requests for funding all the time. Other community projects that are planned to help raise money for the Lions includes the Mother's Day dinner at the Seaforth Legion on May 14, a donation from both the branch and the Ladies' Auxiliary. A mail -out campaign is still ongoing for the Lions pool and Beuttenmiller says cheques are still being accepter at Box 321, Seaforth, Ont. with receipts issued for any donation over $10. Beuttenmiller says the fencing around the pool was being taken down Monday with machinery that will excavate the deck and knock down the deep end wall happening either Tuesday or Wednesday (April 19). Because rainy weather will slow the work, Beuttenmiller says he's hoping for a dry month when "a lot could be completed." After school lessons in June have been delayed by one week to give the Lions some breathing space with the project. "We want it completed and ready to go June 15. It's a pretty tight schedule," s a y s Beuttenmiller. 111111110 'The Lions pool has been established for so long that there have been a lot of swimming lessons, picnics and good times there,'— Bob Beuttenmiller IiVESS 'kW6/?S If you are operating a busbies. is Human County YOU WON'T WANT TO MISS!
