Students munch on fruits and veggies in ne healthy snac program Susan Hundertmark The Huron Expositor • April 12, 2006 Pape 28 ammEEED St. James students munched'on fruit and veggies last week as a fruit and vegetable "fiesta" began a healthy snack program at the school. With funding from a Victorian Order of Nurses project that is bringing fruit and vegetables into 278 schools across Southwestern Ontario, St. James students snacked off of trays of fresh produce every day before the morning recess. "So far, it's been a huge -hit. The kids love it," says principal Mary Brown. Each day last week focussed on a different colour with red, green and orange fruits and veggies on the tray. As well, students who pack fruit and vegetables in their lunch quali- fied to put their names in a draw with the chance of winning play- ground toys like balls and skipping ropes. The snack program was initiated by the school council to ensure all students were receiving healthy food during the school day. "There are families out there who are not in a position to supply healthy food and we wanted to offer a way to have it without drawing attention to their circumstances," says Brown.
