Huron East donates antique firetruck to Brussels department
Susan Hundertmark
Huron East is donating a 1953
Chev Pumper to the Brussels Fire
Department, making Brussels the
third and final fire department in
Huron East to own an antique fire
truck.
The 1953 truck was removed from
service after a new truck was
received recently in Brussels.
But, councillors were told the
truck will remain on the town's
insurance policy.
"Insurance for antique trucks is
very hard to come by," said Huron
East Fire Chief Marty Bedard.
Bedard added that firefighters in
Brussels are very happy with their
new truck.
Extra provincial funding to be
used on roads and bridges
The extra $411,000 in provincial
funding for roads and bridges in
Huron East and $2.5 million for
roads and bridges for Huron County
was noted at Huron East's April 4
meeting.
"What is the county doing with its
extra $2 million? I hope they're not
making recommendations to have a
flipping spending spree," said Coun.
Mark Beaven.
Mayor Joe Seili responded that
one look at the bridge report in
Huron East should show him that
there will be no spending spree in
Huron East.
Huron East has 26 bridges that
need repairs and is planning to
4:.
repair three in McKillop this year.
Ratepayers letter sparks
council discussion on segways
A Huron East ratepayer wants to
know if he can drive his two -
wheeled motorized vehicle, a
Segway, on municipal sidewalks,
council learned at its April 4 meet-
ing.
"The biggest dilemma is it travels
at 20 kilometres per hour and that's
a fast rate of speed. It can't go on
the road but it's too fast for the side-
walk," said Clerk -Administrator
Jack McLachlan.
McLachlan provided information
to council about two and three -
wheeled vehicles, including limited
speed motorcycles, mopeds and low -
speed vehicles, and their regula-
tions.
He said Huron OPP said two -
wheeled motorized vehicles are not
allowed on sidewalks.
"We're doing further investigat-
ing," he said.
Council agrees to donate hall to
girls marching band
Huron East council agreed to
donate the hall to the Seaforth and
District All -Girls Marching Band
when it holds a spaghetti dinner at
the Seaforth arena on Sunday, April
30.
The dinner is planned to help
raise money for the band's trip to
the Calgary Stampede this July.
