Susan Hundertmark Farmers will be slowing down the movement of food - making the point they could empty grocery store shelves - beginning tonight (April 12) at 9 p.m. to protest the current farm income crisis, says Bev Hill, of Varna. Hill, a member of the Grassroots Movement, says farmers were encouraged by how they were received last Wednesday on Parliament Hill in Ottawa where close to 10,000 farmers from across Canada converged. But, the lack of an announcement of a specific amount of government aid to farmers means "the job's not .done," he says. •"All the federal politicians have indicated they're supportive. All we need now is the money. And how do we leverage that support into political action?" he says. A three -pronged protest is planned at grocery distribution centres in Cambridge, Whitby and Ottawa, planned to begin at 9 p.m. Wednesday and continue until at least noon on Thursday. "We are disappointed there is no announcement out of Ottawa yet and action will continue if no announcement comes," says Hill. "We're reluctant to disrupt the public's access to food but the reality is farmers have been subsidizing prices for too long and we're not prepared to do it any longer," he says.
