Ontario Early Years is offering the
Family Fitness Frenzy to parents
and their children, who want to
exercise and learn about healthy
eating habits.
The program is running for six
weeks, beginning this past Tuesday
at Seaforth Public School. The hour
and a half workshop goes from 10 to
11:30 a.m.
Children up to age six can partici-
pate, says Lisa DeJong, of the
Ontario Early Years Centre in
Huron County.
"It is a good program because it's
about educating parents,". says
DeJong.
She says parents will talk about
the food groups and how they can
include as many ` of the groups in
their baby's food and what a correct
portion of food is for a toddler, dur-
ing the healthy eating portion of the
program.
"They'll make a placemat and a
healthy snack," says DeJong:
"It will be parents and children
playing together."
They'll also play : a game of I Spy
with the four food groups and
healthy eating bingo.
DeJong says she also hopes to
raise interest in kids when it comes
to helping out around the kitchen.
"If we can get kids involved with
making food then they might eat
something like broccoli if they've
helped," she says.
Lissa Berard from the Vanastra
Recreation Centre will be leading
the fitness aspect of the program in
the school's gym.
DeJong says the purpose is to
make. families more aware of
healthy activities they can do.
"They're going to do some body
awareness work and get their blood
flowing," she says.
DeJong says Ontario Early Years
is looking into holding the program
again in the summer, possibly at the
Vanastra Recreation Centre.
"It depends on how this goes, but
everyone is excited so far. Parents
want to see what it is about."
The program is free, and anyone
can show up for as many sessions as
they would like, says DeJong.
Family Fitness Frenzy will be held.
