A 3,000 -year-old traditional
Jewish dinner - the Passover Seder
- will be celebrated at Northside
United Church to mark Easter on
Thursday, April 13 at 6 p.m.
"This is certainly a very Christian
area but the very roots of
Christianity are Jewish. All the first
Christians were Jewish and there is
nothing within Christianity that
does not have a Jewish back-
ground," says Northside's Rev. John
Gould.
Gould, who says his ancestor
Matthew Gould was originally
Matthew Gold before he converted
to Christianity from Judaism to join
the British army before coming to
Canada in 1805, has held Seder din-
ners at various other United
churches in New Brunswick and
Eastern Ontario.
"It's important to know our roots,"
he says.
The dinner will be kosher and
include Passover ritual including
the lighting of candles by the
women, the pouring of wine (or in
this case, red grape juice) by the
men, and the story of deliverance
With questions asked by the chil-
dren.
The story of Passover is the
Biblical story of how the Jews were
freed from slavery in Egypt.
The menu will include fish salad,
matzah ball soup, roasted chicken,

Gould says Christ's Last Supper
was the Passover meal and that
much of the symbolism of the meal
is reflected in the Easter story.
As well, he says the Christian
sacrament of Communion also
comes out of the Passover meal.
Celebrating the Passover Seder is
a first in Seaforth, says Gould
adding that organizers are feeling
excited about it.
"I think it's a wonderful idea,"
says organizer Marg Whitmore.
"Children are part of this and it will
be quite an education for them."
The meal is open to the whole
community, with tickets being sold
at $10 for adults, $5 for ages six to
12 and free for those five and under.

neath the break pedal.
This assures that if you need to
make a quick stop, the pedal will
reach all the way to the floor.
Making sure your seat belt is on
properly is another safety concern.
"The bottom belt should be over
your hip. If it is too high your stom-
ach could be damaged and if it's too
low you could come right out (in the
case of an accident).
"Driving is a physical activity. Ask
yourself, 'Do I feel up for it? Is any-
thing bothering me?" Shropshall
said.
He added that the OPP have no
problem if a senior has to pull over
and take a nap if they begin feeling
tired when driving.
Baby seats was another issue
raised by Shropshall.
"Statistics say 95 per cent of car
seats are installed wrong," he said.
Shropshall said because installing
a baby seat is such a complicated
process, if they're going to be driving
with a grandchild frequently, they
should buy a baby seat and leave it
installed in their vehicle.
Shropshall also listed distractions
that seniors should try and avoid
like driving with unrestrained pets,
smoking and eating in your vehicle.
