A tourism kiosk had its first year in Seaforth last summer when the municipality spent $2,800 to erect a gazebo containing maps and tourism brochures at Lions Park and staffed it during weekends when volunteers were available. The subject of how to proceed this year with the tourism kiosk came up with a presentation by economic development officer Ralph Laviolette. "It's an important part of your image and we have a lot to offer being the welcoming people we are," Laviolette told council. Laviolette promoted the idea of offering tourism kiosks in both Seaforth and Brussels, staffed by students who and "properly trained" to provide information about local. attractions. He added that with the'renova- tion work planned on Lions Pool this spring, Lions Park might not be the best location this year. "It was a valiant effort last year but if we're going to do it, we should be prepared to do it well," said Laviolette. McKillop Coun. Sharon McClure added that Laviolette told the eco- nomic development committee that the kiosk needed to be staffed more. "We didn't have a lot of support that way (with volunteers). We saw it as a self-service booth but we thought it was well -used," said Deputy -Clerk Brad Knight. Laviolette recommended council apply for federal funding for sum- mer job placements at the kiosk, 'a program that has a March 31 dead - line. But, when councillors asked for an estimate about how much more staffing would add to the bill for the kiosk, Laviolette said he didn't have those figures. "We can't make a decision based on no cost figures," said Grey Coun. Mark Beaven. Beaven suggested giving $3,000 to the Huron East chamber to run the kiosk. "At the very least, we should do what we have done. We started a presence and to drop that presence is not the right thing to do," he said. Newly -elected chamber chair Bob Fisher, who was in attendance at the meeting, said the chamber would be willing to take on the job. "I don't see any prob- lem at all with a simi- lar format to last year. It will be at least equal to last year and hopefully we can build on that and have the bells and whistles next year," he said. After the meeting, Fisher said the cham- ber will begin looking for a location and get- ting prices to rent a building for the kiosk. It will also try apply- ing for a grant to pay for a summer student to staff it. CHARMING ONE - STOREY RANCHER PLAN 5-3-654 4001, ►r OR AT ROOM .xpar MAIN FLOOR PLAN 1929 SQ. FT.
