Seaforth's Dolmage, Kale and Dawe families were among the 30 walkers who took to the halls of Central
Huron secondary school recently to raise money for Huron County Children of Chernobyl. A total of
$3,000 was raised in the ninth annual walk, which will be used to help 18 Belarussian children that will
be arriving in Canada on June 26 to stay with area families for the summer.

Three new Seaforth-area
families will be hosting
Belarussian children this
summer as part of the
Children for Chernobyl in
Huron County program.
"It's always good to get
new families involved,"
says long-time host and
organizer Lynn Dawe.
Lynn and Jim' Dawe
have .been involved in the
program for seven years
and will be welcoming
Sasha Tisbouk, 15, back
into their home for the
sixth time this year.
While Sasha's younger
sister Lena, 13, has also
visited a, few times, she
will not return this year
because, ranked in the top
10 of Belarus's young ten-
nis players last year, she
will be training at home
all summer.
Formed in 1998, the
Huron County chapter of
Child "ren of Chernobyl
brings children, who are
still suffering the effects of
the Chernobyl nuclear dis-
aster of 1986 to Canada
for a respite visit.
With a homeland affect-
ed by toxic pollution in the
soil, plants, food, air and
water, Canadian fresh air
and nutritious food helps
to improve the children's
immune systems and
reverse the ill effects of
radioactive contaminants
they are exposed to daily.
"Our kids are healthier
now than they were when
they started doing this,"
says Lynn.
Evelyn Stam, of
Winthrop, says she and
her husband Henry got
involved in hosting this
year after hearing that
Lynn was having trouble
placing a 10 -year-old girl.
"I said, `We'll take her.'"
says Evelyn. "It's some-
thing we always wanted to
do."
Evelyn says she and her
husband have adopted
children and been foster
parents so getting
involved with Children of
Chernobyl seemed a nat-
ural step.
"The more kids you
know from around the
world, the smaller the
world gets," she says.
Laurie Dolmage and her
husband Larry, of
Seaforth, will be 'hosting a
12 -year-old girl.
"It's to open up our eyes.
There's a big wide world
out there and kids need
help. everywhere. And, I
want my kids to realize
how lucky they are," says
Laurie.
Nancy and Kevin Kale
will also be hosting a 12 -
year -old girl.
"We've been thinking
about it for awhile and
this is the summer to get
involved," says Nancy.
The extra three families
in Seaforth bring the total
of host families involved in
the Huron chapter up
from 15 last year to 18.
