The province is moving towards a 50-50 funding split of ambulance services, which will be completely in effect by 2008. "Our government is committed to helping municipalities provide qual- ity ambulance services," said Mitchell Friday at the Clinton Seaforth ambulance station while unveiling the first round of pay- ments for both counties. Mitchell, who is both a former county warden and reeve for Central Huron, said the issue is one that is near and dear to her heart. She said she struggled with it on the other side of the fence when the entire responsibility was downloaded onto the province by the then Progressive Conservative government in 1999. "EMS workers are really the least celebrated people. When we're head- ing home, they're heading out," said Mitchell. Huron County Warden Rob Morley, who was on hand for the presentation, said "this is a big step" in the right direction. He added, however, that more help is necessary given that wages have increased $700,000 provincewide this past year.
