Students offered hands-on medical experience
with MedQUEST camp this summer in Seaforth
Jeff Heuchert
An opportunity is coming
this summer to Grade 10
and 11 students from both
Huron and Perth Counties,
who are interested in pursu-
ing careers in the medical
field.
It's a week-long summer,
camp called MedQUEST,
that gives students realistic
experience in medical situa-
tions through simulated
training, peer workshops
and watching medical pro-
fessionals at work.
According to the
MedQUEST website, stu-
dents will learn how to deliv-
er babies, read x-rays, splint
and cast fractures, create a
professionalresume and
gain an understanding of the
training requirements need-
ed to become a physician.
Project manager with
Healthkick Huron, which is
helping organize the camp in
Seaforth, Laura Overholt
says there are only 24 spots
available for Huron -Perth
students, and she expects a
large number of students to
apply.
"I think it will be well
received, from what I'm
hearing so far," she says.
Most of the camp's activi-
ties will be held at Seaforth
Public School, says Overholt,
although students will have
the opportunity to get out
and shadow a medical pro-
fessional, and a mock -disas-
ter on the last day is expect-
ed to take place at the air-
port in Goderich.
The camp, which is orga-
nized by the Schulich School
of Medicine and Dentistry,
ran a pilot project last sum-
mer in Sarnia that was
extremely successful.
As a result, this year ,the
camp is being offered in six
locations, including Seaforth
from July 10-14 for Huron -
Perth students.
Overholt says applications
will be sorted through and
the decision will be made by
a coordinator at the Schulich
School of Medicine.
"What they're looking for
are students who are giving
the possibility of pursuing a
healthcare profession in the
future," she says, adding
that leadership qualities will
also go a long way when
they're deciding who .to
select to participate.
Each student who submits
an online application must
also have a reference form
filled out by either a princi-
pal, vice-principal, guidance
councillor or science teacher.

MedQUEST must apply at
