Conference encourages
farmers to 'grow opportunities
Susan Hundertmar

Reinventing what you do and moving it to a
new level is the key to diversifying your farm
operation, a Nova Scotia farmer told Huron
and Perth County
farmers at a Growing
Your Opportunities
conference last Tuesday
in Seaforth.
"Some of the most
ingenious people I've
met are farmers. They're
very innovative people -
they've got lots of
thinking time on the
tractor or in the winter,"
said Gary Morton.
Morton was the
keynote speaker at the
conference which
brought together
agricultural innovators
and experts on food and
marketing trends.
"To be able to see
where the industry is
going in the future and
to make changes is the
key to success," said Morton, adding that
many farmers are finding opportunities with
processing on their farms.
While Morton acknowledged that value-
added farming will not save the whole
industry in today's income crisis, he said it
can make the difference for individuals
looking for a way to survive.
"Value -adding is for individuals. If everyone
does it, you've lost the opportunity," he said.
But, he added it's
finding the right, unique
opportunity that makes
the difference.
"People all have genius
in them. It's a matter of
getting it out. What
works for one farmer
doesn't work for
another," he said.
He gave the example
from the Maritimes of a
Newfoundland farmer -
probably the last pig
farmer in the province -
who 'survived by
beginning an "adopt -a -
pig" program where
'consumers adopt a pig
for $50, pay $150 when:
the pig isown and pay.
another 10 to $20 to
have it butchered.
"That way, he got the
money up front for
production and had a guaranteed market,"
pointed out Morton.
He also talked about a Nova Scotia
blueberry grower who recently won an
international award for creating a
blueberry health juice with an
extraordinarily high antioxidant
levels that he sells for $10 to $15 a
bottle.
Another dairy farmer in Nova
Scotia began building chalets on his
property in the agri-tourism
business and now has a lodge that
is 80 per cent occupied throughout
the year, booked for weddings and
Christmas three years in advance.
As well, over 5,000 tourists
and nature lovers now visit a Nova
Scotia farm where people are
invited to watch the bald eagles
that gather there each year.
"Look at all the different ways
tomatoes are sold. It's a matter of
looking at a tomato and thinking
about it differently," he said.
Packaging carrots or tomatoes
as snack food can increase the
amount of money a farmer gets for
the product.
And, selling directly to
consumers can also increase a
farmer's profits.
He said another Nova Scotia
beef farmer has a refrigerated truck
and sells his product directly to the
consumer at various locations
throughout the week.
Morton said a business plan is
