SPS one of five area schools
to benefit from Fun Fit program
Susan Hundertmark
At first glance, a play-
ground full of children run-
ning around, laughing and
burning off steam seems like
a typical recess at Seaforth
Public School.
But, look closer and you'll
see Grade 7 and 8 students
learning leadership skills as
Grades 1 to 6 students are
encouraged to have fun while
keeping fit.
SPS is one of five schools in
the area to receive Ministry
of Tourism and Recreation
funding through a Vanastra
Recreation Centre and Huron
County Health Unit proposal
called Fun Fit to keep school
aged children active and fit.
The program began with
the training of 19. Grade 7
and 8 students to lead activi-
ties in the playground every
Monday, Wednesday and
Friday during recess.
"The whole idea is to get
them exercising. The govern-
ment is recognizing that
we're getting fatter. Canada,
let's get fit," says parent vol-
unteer Doug Perkes.
The student leaders were
given booklets suggesting a
variety of schoolyard games,
from which they're choosing
age-appropriate games and
teaching them to the others.
The leaders get a logbook,
noting their successes and.
failures and ideas of how . to.
make improvements.
"It's a learning process.
We've talked about the quali-
ties of a good . loader and
they're finding out that the
younger kids tend to fool
around a little," says Perkes.
At SPS, six leaders run the
program each recess, dividing
the groups into Grades 1 to 3
and Grades 4 to 6.
SPS -principal Kim Black
says she's been looking for a
similar program for several
years and jumped . at the
chance to get involved with
Fun Fit.
"The benefits of teaching
organized play spreads every-
where," she says.
Now that the initial train-
ing has been done, Black says
the program will continue
indefinitely.
"As long as we have a vol-
unteer parent tokeep it
going, it will," says Black.
