The auction, which included a penny sale for children, a silent auction and a live auction, packed the Walton Hall with bidders. "The roof is in rough shape and this will kick- start some fundraising so we can repair or replace it. We don't know exactly how much we need yet," says Auctioneer Jim Campbell takes a bid while Monique Baan holds up the maple syrup up for sale at Walton Hall's Raise the Roof auction Saturday night. Glenda Morrison, chair of the fundrais- ing committee at Duff's. Morrison said that while no official quotes have been obtained yet, costs could be as high as $40,000 to $50,000, a total that could take several years to achieve. Organizer Marie McGavin said all sorts of things were donated to be auctioned from meat vouchers to handmade crafts by auc- tioneer Jim Campbell. She said the church, built in 1912, still has its original slate roof. By Susan Hundertmark Huron -Bruce MPP questions effectiveness of farm protests From Page 3 both the NDP and Conservative parties addressed the crowd, no Liberal MPP spoke at the rally. A few. days later, Huron -Bruce's MPP said she did attend a part of the rally and recog- nized a number of faces from the community. However, she wondered whether protests were the most effective method of getting the message across. "I think you have to use more than one method. I don't know, if general- ly, protests are as effective as they once were," said Carol Mitchell. Meanwhile, at the rally, tractors parked along the streets outside of the historic governing house sported signs condemning the government's approach to farming. "It was the least we could do to show our support," said Simon VanDriel who drove a truck with the North Huron Snowmobile Association's groomer on the back of it to Toronto. While Bev Hill wishes farmers didn't have to rally, he said it's a reality that needs to be faced. He reported that his father Gord drove a tractor to Queen's Park many years ago. "It is shameful that 41 years after dad drove up here in 1965 we're doing the same thing again, for the same reasons." Hope Blooms! April is Daffodil Month.
