Plus, there is that yummy $315 million pledged over two years to "help" keep Toronto's property tax hikes at 3 per cent or lower, which is a weird thing for the province with all of its "don't ask us for help, we're broke" protestations. And yes,. these truths must be weighing heavily on the minds of the province's farmers in light of the fact that though they are part of Ontario's No. 2 money -making and job -creating industry, they just don't have the voter power that would necessitate a change in policy. In fact, the urban -swayed Liberal caucus is so out of touch with its rural counterparts that the province had the audacity to chop the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food and Rural Affairs' budget to $896 million, down from $1.14 billion in 2005.while throwing more money at areas, like healthcare, that could easily afford a slash in the paperwork department. So, the question for farmers continues to be: What does it take to have a voice at Queen's Park? According to Finance Minister Dwight Duncan, they are going to need the feds to step up tbefore the province will commit. And yet, one has to question what would motivate Queen's Park to worry about the small, quiet world west and east of the provincial capital. Ultimately though, the fact remains that if a few MPPs would do some long-term planning they'd see saving a few farmers from the brink of bankruptcy today will cost a lot less than having to invest bil- lions to draw new farmers into a nearly non-exis- tent sector 10 years down the road. Movies are my thing, even if that makesme a nerd Everybody has their thing. You know, some- thing they know quite a bit about. For many people, their thing is sports. These are the people who will inadvertently ignore their spouses when a big game is on, or will spend an entire week dis- secting the end to last week's game. Your thing might be cooking, or shopping, or a specific performer or band. My thing is movies. I'm the guy who likes to know what movies are being released soon, whichones are being filmed - even which movies they're thinking about making.. My subscription to Entertainment Weekly helps me keep up-to-date on these matters, with extensive summer and winter movie pre- view issues. I'm a big fan of the Oscars. I don't just read about the winners the next day, I watch the whole show. All three plus hours of it (just ask my girlfriend Lindsay - she thinks I'm nuts.) Which brings me to my point of contention. Apparently, just because I'm passionate about something, I'm either nuts, or as my girlfriend puts it (in a relatively cute way so I don't get mad) a nerd. It doesn't really bother me though. I just remind her that it takes a nerd to fall in love with one. 1-1111111111 By Jeff !euchei She always points out my nerd -like qualities when I talk about old. movies, specifically, Abbott and Costello films from the `30s and `40s, which I love. . I know what you're thinking - "man, he's cool." Aside from those come- dies, I am - a fan of what I like to call "good movies." You know, the ones where it is required that you use your brain while watching. It's not like I only watch serious dramas all the time (remember, I love Abbott and Costello), but maybe I'm just getting older (not that 22 is old), and have grown an appre- ciation for interesting, thought-provoking cin- ema. I've had my share of arguments with Lindsay over this issue before (I still cringe when I think of some of the films in her col- lection). Apparently, I'm also a nerd when I try and discuss a movie after seeing it, on the drive home. Why is this wrong? I don't think asking for someone's opinions and thoughts about a movie is too much to ask, but sometimes it is like pulling teeth. For anyone with an appreciation for films like I have, that conversation afterwards is necessary to make me feel like the movie going experience is complete.
