Clinton -area swimmers held their own against
Ontario's best last week during the annual provincial
meet.
A number of local high school students recorded per-
sonal best times and four placed within the top 20 dur-
ing the March 7-8 Ontario Federation of Schools
Athletic Association (OFSAA) championships.
"We're a small school, so to have top 20 finishes is
quite an accomplishment," St. Anne's coach Terry Van
Osch explained.
"There were 1,710 swimmers competing. It was unre-
al. I didn't sit down for two days.":
St. Anne's swimmer Scot Ferguson won bronze in 100 -
metre free and placed seventh in 5.0 -metre free.
Ferguson competed in the Swimmer With a Disability
(SWAD) races:
Shawn Reinink placed fifth in 50 -metre back and
eighth in 100 -metre free, while Jessica Sparling ,fin-
ished 10th in the 50 -metre free.
In the consolation final for the 200 -metre free Rachel
Van Osch placed 15th.
The Eagles relay team comprised of Van Osch,
Sparling, Sarah Vaessen and Val Otten also bettered its
time, finishing 35th out of 40. Christy Hartman also
showed improvement.
Central Huron secondary school's sole OFSAA com-
petitor Jocelyn Bartliff also improved her WOSSAA
times at last week's provincial meet.
"She didn't make the finals, but the fact that she is
only in her second year of competitive swimming and
she made it to OFSAA is pretty impressive," CHSS
coach Scott Middleton said.
"As a carded swimmer she's facing some kids that
have been swimming competitively since they were six
years old.
"This is only her first year of senior swimming, so
we're expecting really good things next year."
