Seaforth asking for
community involvement in
Communities in Bloom venture
Susan Hundertmark
Seaforth is getting ready to
bloom this summer.
As a spin-off from last
year's First Impressions com-
munity exchange program
that partnered Seaforth with
Petrolia, Seaforth has been
invited to enter the
Communities in Bloom com-
petition with Petrolia, last
year's national champion in
Seaforth had to offer. We feel
we should be very flattered,"
says Huron East deputy -clerk
Brad Knight.
"Seaforth had everything
we thought we could use in a
partner. We're helping each
other," says .Donna
Mcllmoyle, of Petrolia.
During last year's First
Impressions exchange, mem-
bers of each community trav-
elled to the other and offered
suggestions about how
attractive, welcoming,
clean and informative
_ they appear.
The Petrolia delega-
tion was impressed by
the heritage buildings
in Seaforth. and
thought Seaforth would
easily do well in a

groups, churches and
-horticultural society,
hoping to gain their
support in the competi-
tion. The Seaforth BIA
has already agreed to
participate.
"The BIA thinks it's a
good idea. Now, we
have to get citizen
involvement," says
Knight.
Municipal, commer-
cial/industrial and resi-
dential areas are all
judged with nine crite-
ria, including tidiness,
environmental aware-
ness, community
involvement, conserva-
tion, tree management,
landscaping, floral dis-
plays, turf and ground -
covers and partnership
effort.
Knight, along with several
other committee members,
has been touring Seaforth,
Egmondville and Harpurhey,
taking pictures and looking
at areas that can be improved
in appearance.
The main request from
organizers is that gardeners
in town use the colours red
and white, with an accent of
yellow, fuchsia and lime
green when they plant this

Communities in Bloom is a
Canadian non-profit organi-
zation committed to fostering
civic pride, environmental
responsibility and beautifica-
tion through community par-
ticipation and the challenge
of national competition.

us was they liked what

Other improvements
Knight hopes to make include
fixing up some of the local
signage, creating a few more
gardens around town signs
and at town entrances and
building flower boxes to hang
on bridges at Lions Park and
at the south edge of
Egmondville.
"Things are not going to
look a whole lot different but
we're hoping people will pick
up on the colours and do a lit-

Knight.
