Alliance properties go
smokefree June 1
Susan Hundertmark
All of the Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance's
four hospitals will be smokefree on all hospi-
tal property beginning June 1.
"Patients and staff will have to smoke off
hospital property and they won't be able to
smoke in their cars if they're parked on hospi-
tal property," Seaforth Community Hospital
site administrator Mary Cardinal told the
Seaforth Local Advisory Committee (LAC)
last week.
Bedridden patients will be helped with
pharmaceutical solutions, such as the "patch,"
and support will be given to both staff and
patients trying to quit smoking.
"We all have a small core of diehard smok-
ers and we'll support them," she said.
"Initially, it will be tough for some people."
Cardinal added that the hospital will be:
communicating with its neighbours "so they
don't think their property will be the new
smoking. area."
The move to make all Alliance property
smoke-free was passed by the Alliance board
recently and scheduled to coincide with the
province's Smokefree Ontario Act that comes
into effect May 31.
The issue was raised again during the
Alliance's board of directors' meeting March 2,
and this time the decision faced some criti-
cism.
Director Bob Norris questioned if the hospi-
tal would be liable if a patient or staff mem-
ber was injured while off of a hospital's prop-
erty to have a cigarette?
"I think we're overkilling here. All we're
doing is moving them from close to the build-
ing to the street," he said.
Director Philip Squires wondered what kind
of action the hospital would take if patients or
staff were caught smoking near the building?
"Are we going to give them a fine - arrest
them?"
Squires added that he felt this was an easy
decision to make for non-smokers, and that it
would be difficult for smokers to adhere to,
especially those that are addicted. •
Following the comments Chair Ron
Bolton reminded the board that a motion had
already been passed by a majority vote.
