The leader of the provincial Progressive Party knows that farm communities and small towns have a great deal of problems. "It's really hurting right now. The farmers are hurting, the manufac- turers are hurting," Tory said in a stop : at the Blyth arena last Saturday. Tory, who unsuccessfully ran for Toronto's mayor in the last munici- pal election, admitted connecting with rural Ontario has been a challenge. Officially, Tory repre- sents the riding of Dufferin-Peel- Wellington-Grey but has lived in Toronto most of his life. "I've had to learn a lot about the country and the rural way of life," he said. Since he took over the reign's of the Conservative Party in Sept. 2004, Tory has tried to familiarize him- self with rural Ontario. When he visited Blyth on March 4, his mes- sage was clear: his voice stands up for the plight of the rural people. In a breakfast speech and in media interviews at the arena, the topic of farming and its end- less challenges was Growing opportunties theme of conference The theme of a new conference for Huron and Perth farmers, called Growing Your Opportunities, is find- ing as many sources of income as possible. Tory warned Huron -Bruce that the current "urban -focused" Liberal government is running a one -size fits all approach to agriculture. "It's low (on the priority list)," Tory remarked. "It's only on the radar screen when it's a protest or a crisis." Tory said Ontario farmers are fac- ing an unequal playing field against American and Quebec counterparts. Tory described' subsidy programs as a "band-aid solution." Instead, Tory suggested further financial assistance for farmers with some of the programs the gov- ernment is trying to put in place. He said more provincial funding is needed so farmers can implement nutrient management programs. He called for. long-term planning solutions. He suggested a renewed effort to educate people in the city about where their food comes from. He expressed a need for a provin- cial and federal government strate- gy to be developed. small towns "What's happening now is you have these games going on," Tory said. He continues to raise questions and concerns in the provincial legis- lature about farming. He said he's committed to making people realize that the agriculture is a huge business and it employs thousands of people.
