Highway 8 rally brings out 100
tractors to protest income crisis

Area farmers took to their
tractors Wednesday in a
grassroots protest designed
to draw urban attention to
the ongoing farm -income
crisis.
The crisis,_ which is hitting
the grain and oilseed sector
as well as beef and pork
producers, is reaching the
point where some farmers
will find themselves . out of
business this year, reported
event participant Steve
Webster, whose heifer
operation is teetering on
insolvency due to the damage
wrought by the Bovine
Spongiform Encephalopathy
(BSE) crisis.,
Webster said he was
pleased to see the more than
100 vehicles on the road
during the protest. He also
noted a number of long-haul
truckers pledged support for
the cause.
While the local event ran
for more than three hours
and made the trip up to four
times longer for those who
chose to stay on the route,
another protest held on
Highway 40 between
Wallaceburg and Chatham
effectively shut down the
highway on the busy
commuter route.
Webster said the Clinton-
Goderich event was designed
as "more or less a test" and
similar protests are
scheduled to take place
across the province in the
weeks to come, including a
large-scale rally set for an
unidentified location on
March 9.
"This thing was put
together very very quickly,"
he said. "It basically went
together in a day in a half."

Huron
farmers
divided
on closing
trails
Jeff Heuchert
Several members of the
Huron County Federation of
Agriculture have made it
clear that they do not support
farmers closing trails to
snowmobilers in an act of
protest to the government.
However, the HCFA board
of directors did vote
unanimously to support a
motion for the HCFA to work
cooperatively with
snowmobilers in lobbying the
government.
HCFA president Nick
Whyte said he realizes a
motion to support farmers
closing their land to
snowmobilers would have
faced fiery feedback.
HCFA member Bob Hallam
said he felt farmers were
going about their protest the
wrong way.
"I don't think to get the
support of the snowmobilers
you give them a slap in the
face," he said, adding that the
government would be happy
to see farmers going after
snowmobilers instead of
them.
"We have to keep our
targets on the bureaucrats -
strictly on them - and get to
them through our MPPs."
Hallam went on to say he
thought by closing the trails,
farmers would be treating
snowmobilers as poorly as
how they've been treated by
the government.
"You (snowmobilers) have a
